FAQ
What can I expect for the first session?
Your intake session is a time for us to get acquainted with each other. We will invite you to share more about what lead you to seek therapy and outcomes you would like to see. We will learn about your background and work toward exploring a plan for helping you reach your therapy goals. The intake also provides the opportunity for you to explore whether we are a good fit for each other. For children and adolescents, we ask that a caregiver be present for at least the beginning of the first session.
How do we provide services?
We provide our counseling services through a secure HIPAA compliant program over video.
What does a typical session look like?
Appointments will look different depending on each person's needs and style, however, they are all typically 50 minutes in length. For young children, sessions may be focused on play or parent work. For older children, teens, and adults, sessions can be tailored to what we collaboratively feel would be most effective. Some examples include writing stories about your challenges and using evidence-based assessments, but many people choose to just talk through events, thoughts, and feelings that have surfaced since the last session. Depending on your reason for seeking therapy and your goals, talking may be more present-focused, or may include exploring your past to make connections to current challenges. We strive to make therapy a collaborative process, combining your wishes with our experience with evidence-based practices.
Is online therapy right for me?
In our experience, online therapy (telehealth) works well for people who are experiencing mild to moderate symptoms (not actively experiencing a crisis or suicidal/homicidal thoughts), who have a private space for sessions, and are reasonably comfortable using technology. While telehealth lacks some dynamics of in-person sessions, it has its own perks including ease of scheduling, increased privacy, and the ability to receive support without leaving home.
Do we accept insurance?
No. At this time our practices are self-pay only. We accept payment directly through our therapy portal and fees are due at the time of service. Some insurance companies will reimburse the cost of treatment with an out of network provider via a "super bill" that we are able to provide directly to you upon request. You are then able to submit the "super bill" to your insurance company for reimbursement. Services may also be paid for with a Health Savings Account card. We understand that finances can be a barrier to treatment, and we are happy to be flexible in determining a frequency of appointments that feels reasonable, clinically and financially.
By paying out of pocket for your therapy, your personal information remains totally confidential. If you were to use your insurance for therapy, your insurance company would require us to label you with a mental health diagnosis. They would also have access to this diagnosis and to your treatment information. They can dictate length and frequency of treatment, as well. There is also the possibility of a claim being denied or a change in coverage. By using self-pay, you are in complete control of your treatment, in collaboration with your provider. This freedom allows us to work together to avoid unnecessary labels and create a plan for treatment which will be most effective in helping you achieve your goals. Your cost for treatment will be predictable, allowing for easier budgeting. Please contact us if you would like more information regarding the benefits of self-pay.
Can I work with you if I don't live in NH?
At this time, we are all only licensed to practice counseling with clients in New Hampshire.
